Between Saudi Arabia and Indonesia a diplomatic tug-of-war was inflamed around condemned men. In Saudi Arabia 25 Indonesian women and men are at present sitting in a death cell.
A 14-member government commission from Indonesia wants to prevent the worst now in Saudi Arabia. According to an Indonesian embassy spokesman in Riyadh the commission will intensify “the efforts of the embassy for the rescue of the 25” with representatives of Saudi Arabia.
The 25 condemned to death are particularly employees in Saudi Arabian households. According to the daily paper “Arab news” they were condemned to death for different crimes. 22 further domestic workers from Indonesia are so far “pardoned and expelled to Indonesia”.
Apart from the rescue of the men and women on death row Indonesia requested entrance to the remaining arrested Indonesians in Saudi Arabia. 1,700 serve at present a sentence of imprisonment.
The relations between Saudi Arabia and by the majority Muslim Indonesia lately worsened noticeably. Triggers were a set of violence and killing acts, with which Indonesian employees were mixed up.
In June Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had accused Saudi Arabia of the defiance of “international rules”. The desert state had earlier executed an Indonesian domestic worker, without informing Jakarta before.
The 54-year old Ruyati binti Sapubi had been beheaded with the sword, because she had killed her Saudi Arabian boss. Sapubi had explained during the process, she had been insulted by her boss and prevented to leave Saudi Arabia. The execution had provided for large excitement in Indonesia.
Some days after, Saudi Arabia explained that there will be no more work grants for domestic workers from Indonesia or the Philippines. This step was justified with the different wage demands in these countries.
According to human right organizations the millions domestic workers coming from Asian countries are often committed to physical violence in Saudi Arabia. Besides they are exploited as workers, since there are hardly existing labor law regulations.
